Valley Friends Church is located in Mount Vernon Washington, and is a part of Northwest Yearly Meeting of Friends Churches. It was a church plant of Northwest Yearly Meeting in 1986. Northwest Yearly Meeting of Friends Churches is made up of Evangelical Friends Churches who join together in co-operation throughout Oregon, Washington and Idaho.
We at VFC feel that the system of the Society of Friends is one of the best for bringing the Gospel to the community around us. With its focus on the Common Ministry, we can equip and send out normal people into the community to articulate the word of reconciliation amid acts of kindness, which are the environment for the articulation of the truth. Taking normal people who have repented, abandoning their old goals and dreams, to take up their cross; their assignment in the ministry of reconciliation with a whole heart and a single-minded focus. To be a people who are incarnate, or dwelling among those who need them. To be a people who have set aside their pursuits of security, personal value and the longing after a pleasant life, but instead are supporting themselves so that they might not be a burden upon those who they are trying to reach. Joining together as teams, working to use all their resources to impact the community by developing acts of kindness for the poor and needy in the community so that they might be involved in their everyday lives and so have significant impact. And in this partnership work through the issues of loving one another and putting aside our old selfish nature.
Valley Friends Church has two House Churches, or communities, or teams (whatever you want to call them). Fourteen people who have joined in the partnership of the Gospel. One of those house churches is a four-plex in Mount Vernon, taking in and working with those to whom they have had opportunity to work with. The other is a farm in Sedro-Woolley, which is doing the same thing. Sunday morning we meet together in Mount Vernon for worship, edification and enjoyment of one another, there are about 45 to 60 of us on a given Sunday. We rotate through three different types of services on Sunday mornings. First there is six weeks of preaching, and then a celebration Sunday of songs, testimony and dinner. Then there is six weeks of Christian education followed by a celebration Sunday, and then back to six weeks of preaching, and so on.
Our goals at VFC revolve around following the Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to his sovereignty, learning all he has to teach by his Spirit through the Scriptures, and experimenting how to best practice what he has taught us. We want to get clearer by the day, to see where the Father is working so that we might work there as well. Our hope is to continue to develop a house church in each city of the county, and develop teams that can be sent abroad into works there as well, as God continues to send forth workers into the harvest field. It is the desire of our whole heart to conform into the image of Christ; each of us conforming in character, methodology and purpose, and so becoming more like him, tangibly, today.
