"Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is
the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many
enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road
that leads to life, and only a few find it..."
The 'few' that Jesus is talking about isn't the
'exclusive few'
or the 'scholarly few', nor even the 'popular few'. He isn't
talking about in-groups or 'birds of a feather' flocking together.
It's about those who are searching for Him. He's promised that
those who seek him, will find Him. It's not a hard thing, it
simply takes an undivided and deliberate effort. An effort
that is concentrated and abandoned. This effort is a rare thing,
unique.
"...Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord', will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who
does the will of
my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day,
'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name
drive out demons and perform many miracles? Then I will tell
them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers.'
Whether you're new to the Gospel, or have grown up with it, we
all face the same dilemma: superficiality and
entanglement. Jesus makes it clear that you can miss the path
through either. Our old nature allows us to be amiable toward God. But it writhes when we abandon
entirely to him,
which is the core of repentance.
Life is full of logistical responsibilities that seem to demand
our concentration. This demand gives the impression of being
critical to our fulfillment. The tendency is to try and concentrate
on these demands, along with God watering down our
concentration on both. Everything is demanding our attention.
But in the midst of it, God's still quiet voice beckons to the heart. In the
perpetual chaos, there's his quiet order. In the chill of
relationships, his warmth. In the fog, his profound clarity. In the
dark, his light.
As a local church we don't want to add to the chaos or fog.
Having found the gate we want to encourage and protect each other in
continuing to stick to the path. We try to maintain an environment
that cultivates our continued seeking and growth. It's of great
help when you can seek and grow together, there's enough in life
that tries to isolate, tire and distract. We
pray that you find the gate and hold to the path as well.
