"Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.  Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is - his good, pleasing and perfect will."

We slowly become better at interacting with the culture around us, becoming all things to all men.  Yet, because we are products of the culture, before our repentance, we often adhere to it when we should resist it and withdraw from it when we should interact. Our separation from the the culture is not along the lines of isolation or the shunning of those who disbelieve.  Our separation is internal, meaning that we are not driven by the same goals and agenda that is prevalent in the world.  Only then can we re-enter society and bring a helping hand. When Jesus came to live among us, he was different.  That difference wasn't spatial, but internal, he was driven by something different inside.

"I am sending you out as sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves."

It's our job to understand life.  This understanding is not for our own protection but enables us to help others find life. People in the world need those who can interact in a real way without platitudes and shop talk. They need people they can trust, people who can help them process the truth, people without an ulterior motive. The world can see through religiosity and superficiality, we don't need to add to that. The world needs some depth, and depth comes with a high price; pain and suffering.  Our training by the design of God, confronts our old nature and brings us slowly into conformity with him, that is a war within ourselves.  In addition, not everyone that hears you will appreciate you, and even may be hostile.  But that doesn't take away the world's need for those who can help articulate their struggle.

"If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first."
